Tips to Maintaining a Fresh Smelling Home

So you've just paid for professional cleaning and odor removal in your home, what now? Dust and pet odors are a few examples of recurring nuisances in your home. Maintaining a clean, fresh smelling space isn't too difficult if you simply remember that a little daily goes a long way.

So, what can I do?

Below I will highlight a few of favorite ideas to maintaining a fresh home. There's always plenty of ideas and products out in the world but the most impactful advice really hasn't changed: Clean a little daily, remove odors quickly.

Tip:

Create an organized space to keep your cleaning supplies. I know it might sound like a waste of time, but if your supplies are easy to find and easy to access you are more likely to use them frequently. Think about it, does glancing under the sink at a myriad of unorganized random cleaning bottles and supplies really help encourage you? I didn't think so!

Things to Consider:

  1. Clean Daily

  2. Remove Odors Quickly

  3. Natural Aroma Boosters

  4. Air Purifier

  5. Indoor Plants

Cleaning Daily really is the number one advice to follow. Plain and simple! There's no secret formula or magic answer to maintaining your home other than to...well...maintain it! My grandma always used to tell me that if you clean just a little bit daily throughout the week, you won't ever have a lot of work to do and will have the option to enjoy your weekend! Use a dish? Wash it! See a mess? Clean it real fast while you've noticed it!

Sure, we all get tired of cleaning. But, when you clean frequently you really take a lot of the 'work' out of it. Once a space is clean, maintaining it is always easier in the long run than being stuck delegating another day for full cleaning. And remember, if you notice something getting kind of funky, take care of it quickly which brings us to the next staple...

Remove Odors Quickly! This can't be stressed enough. Strong odors tend to penetrate carpets, furniture, walls, and even appliances. This is why you can think you cleaned and still find there's a funky smell. Couple that with Olfactory Fatigue and you may not even realize the stench stayed. So if you notice some old fruit, maybe a questionable bag of potatoes you didn't realize you left out (trust me on this one, it won't end well!), or perhaps the litter boxes were changed and the remnants have sat in the trashcan for two days, no matter what is causing the funk clean it up, throw it out, take it out.

The longer you let the smell linger, the harder it is to get rid of. This is especially true of smoke odors and urine odors. It's often as pet owners to be used to the different smells our animals put off, but if puppy piddled in the corner or kitty peed over the side of the box, don't hesitate to clean that up quickly!

Natural Aroma Boosters are a great idea for when you want your house to smell amazing but don't want to grab the Febreze or light another candle. Two of my favorites are orange peels with cinnamon in boiling water or apples and cinnamon. The second probably is more preferred because it means I'm making fried apples that I can save for later and my house smells amazing for a few hours! Mmmmm!

Other aroma boosters to consider are natural sprays, carpet deodorizers, wax melts, essential oils on pinecones, and flowers! With the Holiday spirit in mind, scented pinecones definitely are a wonderfully festive way to fill your home with delight.

Pro tip: Don't just scent the pinecones! Grab some sparkly paint and decorate them in festive colors. This is an excellent activity to bring the kids in on!

Air purifiers are commonly suggested to use in the home, and for good reason. Air purifiers are said to help improve air quality, especially for allergy and asthmatics, by reducing pet dander, pollens, smoke, odors, and other airborne contaminants. Many claim to destroy 99.9% of tested bacteria and viruses with filters that catch ultra fine particles as small as .003 microns in size. Cleaner air has often helped many people with mystery ailments such as a recurring cough or sore throat, random skin hives, runny nose, and fatigue. Air purifiers are also said to help people sleep better.

It's also a great option for those who have pet allergies but don't want to risk parting with their furry friends. Air purifiers can help capture both dander and hair. Now, not everyone may need an air purifier, some individuals who have no sensitivities may not notice any changes in their environment. But those with allergies, asthma, and similar sensitivities can benefit greatly from these units.

Indoor Plants have become more popular for the use of their added benefits to your home. NASA researchers have suggested that to achieve optimal air-filtering in your home you will need at least one potted plant per 100 square feet of home or office space (1). Nasa? That's right! They looked at using indoor plants instead of possibly expensive equipment to improve the air quality for astronauts and provide better oxygen. Now, a plant for every 100 square feet isn't always doable, but you shouldn't rule them out as a good idea. One way to work around having a garden inside is to use a mixture of air filters and plants strategically placed around your house. But don't forget plants need good air circulation!

While we're mentioning plants, consider herbs for your kitchen as well. They smell good and offer fresh flavor for your daily cooking needs, not to mention plants have been proven to boost your mood!
